Former South Australian premier Jay Weatherill will be Australia’s next high commissioner to Britain, returning to the centre of national defence policy as the AUKUS submarine program ramps up.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the former Labor leader, who served as premier from 2011 until 2018, would replace Stephen Smith as Australia’s top diplomat in London, arguing Weatherill’s defence credentials made him the best pick for the job.
