Biden is running out of patience with Netanyahu

Bad blood between the Israeli prime minister and the US Democrats goes back a long way. The danger now is that Israel never escapes from the baleful Bibi era.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s visit to the Middle East this week draws attention to the limitations and potential liabilities of the government’s current policy on the crisis in Gaza, not least the absence of any clear reason for why she is going.

The government has already stressed the obvious: Canberra, in the words of both Wong and the prime minister, is “not a central player” in the region, but a “respected voice”.
