The Albanese government’s decision to sign off on an extension to Woodside’s massive gas export facility was met with predictable howls of protest from the climate movement.

Less predictable, though, was the response of Pacific Island countries, whose interest in getting Australia behind its diplomatic efforts to address climate change appeared to momentarily temper their opposition to new fossil fuel projects.
