Time to take politics out of the energy debate

Spreading misinformation about the impacts of offshore wind takes advantage of, and feeds into, legitimate community concerns and apprehensions.

Leadership is not about taking the easy road. It’s about standing firm in the face of misinformation and resistance. Offshore wind presents a critical opportunity for Australia’s energy security, industry and regional communities – yet political gamesmanship threatens to stall progress on one of our most promising solutions.

Our ageing coal-fired power plants are becoming increasingly unreliable. Nine out of 17 plants have already surpassed the average retirement age. Loy Yang A in Victoria, almost 50 years old, will close within the next decade. The era of coal picking up the slack in our energy grid is over. We need long-term policies to secure affordable, reliable energy for the future.
