How Labor’s environment law deal was done

Just ahead of question time on Wednesday, a message was relayed at the staffer level – the Greens party room could live with the compromise. The deal was on.

The moment Anthony Albanese was confident his government could strike a deal with the Greens to pass Labor’s overhaul of Australia’s broken environment laws came on Wednesday afternoon just before question time.

That morning, the prime minister met with Greens leader Larissa Waters and environment spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young in his office where he proposed a compromise deal to get the laws through the Senate before MPs departed for the summer recess.
