Data centres put brakes on Labor’s emissions goals

The massive surge in planned data centre development has forced the Albanese government to downgrade its electricity sector emissions reduction forecasts as the renewables rollout struggles to keep pace with skyrocketing future power demand.

Recent modelling published by the Climate Change and Energy Department found that explosive new artificial intelligence-driven data centre power demand forecasts over the past year are likely to limit previously proposed electricity sector emissions reductions over the next 10 years.
