As jobs and incomes are smashed by the biggest and fastest economic shock Australia has ever experienced, the push for a universal basic income (UBI) is on in earnest. Despite lending my name to a recent call for a liveable income guarantee to see people through this crisis, I don’t agree that a permanent UBI is the answer to long-term inequality and economic insecurity.
