Why renters face a perfect storm

Surging Australian rental prices compounded by record low vacancy rates and falling building approvals translate into a housing supply crisis.

Another record increase in rents and falling vacancy rates in the last three months ensure there will be more pain for Australian governments that seem incapable of doing much to alter this dismal trajectory.

The national obsession with both house prices and housing affordability is now more than matched by the ever-growing plight of renters – a squeeze exacerbated by record immigration.
