April’s inflation figures spell more bad news about a fall in interest rates any time soon.

Yes, monthly figures do jump around by comparison with quarterly figures. But an unwelcome trend of inflation rising slightly this year is apparent in the headline annual figure of 3.6 per cent and, more important, in underlying inflation coming in at 4.1 per cent.
