The conventional wisdom is that the global pandemic has highlighted the hitherto underplayed importance of state governments within Australia’s federation. This is true, for better and for worse in the management of COVID-19 in different jurisdictions.
But the reality is that state governments always have an important role in determining the living standards of their citizens. Hence, as Victorians endure their fourth major lockdown, attention is now being focused on the pre-pandemic performance of Victoria’s political system.
