US-China talks seek to save face, and their economies

Negotiations in Switzerland this weekend between the two superpowers offer the prospect of retreat from a full-on trade war. But will the market’s sense of relief prove premature?

Is the Albanese government about to get even luckier than starting its second term with an imploding rump of an opposition incapable of winning the next election?

The trade talks that finally begin this weekend between China and the US do not yet deserve the extent of relief sentiment buoying markets. There will undoubtedly be major problems to overcome given the erratic nature of the Trump administration and the president’s obsession with tariffs as an economic cure-all.
