The gender split at the Jobs and Skills Summit was in stark contrast to former prime minister Bob Hawke’s 1983 economic gabfest, but did the presence of so many women have the desired outcome?

In an interview for AFR BOSS in early 2021, high-profile director Sam Mostyn lamented the dearth of women sitting around the top tables of government and business when key policy decisions were being fleshed out.

Given the lack of female viewpoints being fed into policymaking, it was hardly surprising that the gender pay gap persisted, women remained over-represented in low-paid sectors such as caring, hospitality and education, and all too often did not work as many hours as they would choose.
