The labour movement has always had trouble with migrant workers. But insecure work has often been the ticket to a secure new citizenship.

The gig economy is really about managing the place of cheap immigrant labour, a segment that has traditionally been at odds with the labour movement.

Right from Federation, workers from China and the Pacific Islands were banned.
