State debt to top $900b, triple pre-pandemic levels

State government gross debt will surge past $900 billion by the end of the decade – more than triple pre-pandemic levels – as premiers struggle to rein in burgeoning infrastructure programs and cut back on cost-of-living support and public servant wages.

All states and territories have handed down budgets for 2025-26 after NSW, Queensland and the ACT revealed they would remain mired in deficit for the forseeable future on Tuesday.
