SA Budget deficit blows out with COVID health spending

Simon Evans

South Australia’s budget will go about $200 million further into the red in 2021-22 than forecast six months ago but Treasurer Rob Lucas says the booming property market has helped limit the projected overall deficit for this financial year to $1.6 billion.

Mr Lucas said on Monday an extra $236 million had been pumped into the health system and into extra resources for police to bolster the COVID-19 response and ready the overall system for the opening up of the economy, which accelerated on November 23 when the state’s borders were opened to fully-vaccinated travellers from NSW and Victoria.
