Politicians, regulators are dismantling a tenet of commerce

A tenet of the system – the separation of legal liability between both sides – is slipping in Australia.

Franchising emerged in the 1800s to solve a rudimentary commercial problem. Entrepreneurs who had invented great products – the Singer sewing machine, for example – lacked the capital to build shops to sell them.

The franchiser-franchisee relationship solved the problem, and remains one of the best ways for small businesses to become big businesses.
