The number of Australians receiving unemployment benefits has fallen to a three-year low, delivering Treasurer Jim Chalmers a potential $3 billion windfall in the May budget.

The share of the working-age population receiving JobSeeker and Youth Allowance has fallen below 2 per cent in some parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, according to analysis of claims data by The Australian Financial Review.
