Gold Coast property developer and philanthropist Soheil Abedian has been watching monster waves pummel Mermaid Beach from his penthouse at 272 Hedges Avenue.

“It’s scary,” he says of the huge surf, driving rain and howling winds whipped up by Cyclone Alfred. “My wife will not let me go out on the balcony in case I suddenly become superman.”
