Very few people know someone who has suffered from a serious case of COVID-19, one senior federal minister says wearily. Yet everyone seems to know someone whose family has suffered serious mental health issues, including self-harm, from the impact of lockdown.

The enormous societal cost of lockdowns – well beyond the daily call-out of positive cases – is belatedly gaining greater political traction, even among some of the previously intractable.
