The federal government's poor start to the year could be about to get worse amid growing speculation dissident Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi will rat on the party within days.

Senator Bernardi, an arch-conservative from South Australia, has been threatening to establish his own breakaway movement for more than a year but speculation intensified recently when he registered the Australian Conservatives movement, which has 50,000 members.
