Federal taxpayers to pick up tab for Queensland cyclone

Tropical Cyclone Debbie has blown a $2 billion hole in Queensland's budget bottom line but the bulk of the tab for damage to public infrastructure will be picked up by federal taxpayers.

While the Queensland Reconstruction Authority is still assessing the full impact of last month's cyclone and associated flooding, Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt said he expected Cyclone Debbie to result in about $1.5 billion being drawn from the federal government's Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
