Conscience vote on gay marriage 'proxy for support'

Liberal Party conservatives are devising a strategy to stop gay marriage being addressed by this Parliament by pressuring their colleagues to back away from pushing for a policy change in the knowledge they will lose.

Liberals who oppose gay marriage claim there is an "overwhelming majority" of Liberal MPs and senators in their camp and that will be enough to discourage their colleagues from bringing on a debate about changing policy from one of opposition to one of allowing a conscience vote.
