Scott Morrison has confirmed that Australia will build a naval base in Papua New Guinea but has insisted the gesture was not motivated by a fear of Chinese influence in the region, but was a product of the longstanding relationship with Port Moresby.
In his first major foreign policy foray as Prime Minister, Mr Morrison told the Asia-Society on Thursday that Australia would strengthen its engagement with the Pacific "because this is our home".
