Companies sitting on fat piles of franking credits might look attractive to investors looking to juice their returns, but fund managers warn there’s another vital ingredient required to utilise this strategy: cash flow.

New research from Macquarie has identified the companies that are sitting on the biggest mountains of franking credits, which in theory have the opportunity to boost returns for shareholders if they are distributed through special dividends or buybacks.
