Drastic reductions to the renewable energy target (RET) would be a breach of faith with the electorate that could cost billions in investment, leaders of big green power companies say.
A review of the RET is due with the government in July, amid rising opposition from government MPs to the current scheme that forces power retailers to buy renewable energy.
