Washington | The largest labour strike in the United States in three years threatens to extend for weeks, potentially halting nearly 50 per cent of American imports and becoming an “October surprise” that could sway the presidential election.

About 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association walked off the job at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports from Maine to Texas on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST).
