Tokyo/Washington | China says it opposes “illegal” sanctions on Russia and has blamed the United States for escalating tensions over Ukraine, while reiterating calls on Thursday for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

China’s Foreign Ministry also rejected comparisons between Ukraine and Taiwan, a self-governed island which Beijing considers a renegade province. Beijing argued that Taiwan was historically part of mainland Chinese territory and there was no question about its claim on the island.
