The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership will deliver incremental economic gains to Australia after India's last-minute withdrawal deprived improved access to a market of 1.3 billion consumers.

But trade experts say the value of the deal lies in its creation of a seamless regional market, and the ability to regularly convene officials from the region's major powers and take a stand against the tide of growing protectionism.
