Lonely Planet's founder on why he's taking more trains this year

No matter where we go, there are hidden costs behind travelling – but the planet pays a lot more for some journeys than others.

Australia may not have a Eurostar, but it does offer some excellent rail options to replace air travel.

After a year when flygskam – flight shame – inserted itself into the “hot new words section of the dictionary, travellers now have to think about how green travel is going to influence their travel plans.

Of course, we complain from Down Under that it’s easy for someone in Sweden or elsewhere in Europe to announce they’re going cold turkey on flying and will henceforth be taking the train. Unfortunately Eurostar doesn’t run between Sydney and Melbourne.
