Why Australians can’t keep away from Aspen
The Colorado ski resort, which turns 75 this month, might have been built on the idea of ‘a community of peace’, but that’s not why Australia is its biggest international market.
In 1970, Hunter S. Thompson ran for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado. One of his policies was to change the name Aspen, by public referendum, to Fat City. “This would prevent greedheads, land-rapers and other human jackals from capitalising on the name Aspen,” the journalist and author said.
Aspen’s night-time glamour is unmatched by comparable ski resorts.
