Having spent decades shuttling between his homes in London and Melbourne, Lonely Planet co-founder Tony Wheeler threw out the long-haul rule book in 2014. His thinking? Why take the most direct route via Asia or the Middle East when you could slow it down and see the sights.
“Back in 1919, the very first England to Australia flight needed 24 stops and took 28 days,” says Wheeler. “Doesn’t that sound more exciting than today’s one stop and 24 hours?”
