A few decades ago, flying long-haul out of Australia to Europe didn’t offer much choice until you got to a hub like Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok and picked up another international airline as a codeshare. It was mainly Qantas, British Airways, Singapore Airlines – and Emirates from 1996, when it began flying to Melbourne.
These days, both choice and frequency continue to grow despite the difficulty of obtaining landing rights in Sydney. Most notably, Turkish Airlines, one of the world’s largest airlines by fleet size and destinations covered, is to enter the Australian market in March.
