On Monday, Labor MP Peta Murphy became one of the nine women, on average, who lose their lives to breast cancer each day in Australia. Is a zero death target realistic?
Almost eight years after Labor MP Peta Murphy received her first breast cancer diagnosis came the discovery that it had spread to her bones. Two weeks later, on July 24, 2019, she gave her maiden speech in parliament.
“Cancer sucks,” she declared when she mentioned her illness towards the end of that speech. “I am neither unique nor alone, but I am someone who has a platform that can be used to benefit others.”
