Why the Queen’s son thinks Aussie food is among ‘best in the world’
His mother might be the Queen, but food critic Tom Parker Bowles is more about fish and chips than finger sandwiches.
For all his quintessential Britishness – and well, just look at him – Tom Parker Bowles might actually be spiritually Australian. He prefers the big flavours of Malaysian and Sichuan cooking to Michelin-star meals, and lives for the “heat and funk” of Thai food.
He’s also fond of McDonald’s, which he refers to as Macca’s. “I love Australia,” says Parker Bowles in his clipped British accent, honed by years at Eton and Oxford. “I haven’t been since lockdown. I miss it terribly. The food is some of the best in the world. Thai food in Sydney is probably the best you get outside of Thailand. I find myself very, very comfortable in Australia.”
