This winemaking family just uncorked all 52 of their cab sav vintages
Since 1970, the Redmans have kept aside bottles of every cabernet they’ve produced. Each reflects the production style – and climate – of its era. From the upcoming September issue, out on August 25.
Dan Redman is cradling a magnum of 1970 cabernet sauvignon produced 12 years before he was born. The fourth-generation winemaker, along with his brother Mike, their dad, Bruce, and uncle Malcolm, is celebrating a half-century of Redman cabernet production and has kicked off proceedings by pouring tastes from this magnum of the inaugural vintage.
“Mike and I are really fortunate,” says Dan. “Grandpa kept back five to 10 dozen bottles of every vintage from the very beginning, and Dad and Mal kept that going. Which is how we can put on this tasting.” We – the wine hacks who’ve been invited to share the celebration – are lucky, too: we’re spending the day tasting through every vintage of Redman cabernet thus far released, from the 1970 (still drinking beautifully) to the latest, 2021.
