Five bottles that are alluring in their complexity, depth and spiciness to surprise your sweetheart.

Forget champagne. Forget rosé. It’s time to move beyond the Valentine’s Day wine clichés and be a little less predictable. After all, nothing says, “I adore you” more than giving your beloved a bottle that they actually want to drink, rather than one that perpetuates some outdated idea of what romance should be.

Don’t get me wrong, I love great fizz and fine rosé as much as the next wine tragic, but I like them at all times of year, not just on February 14. Plenty of others can be just as romantic. Wines that seduce you with texture and richness; wines that, through their depth and complexity, inspire conversation and emotional response; wines with a backstory that speak to human connection.
