The latter part of 2023 has produced a rich mix, from new twists on firm favourites to genuine horological feats. It used to be that brands released their year’s best early in the piece to coincide with the giant Swiss watch fairs that took place in January and March-April. No longer. Now the beauties come all year round, as witnessed in the past few months with impressive releases from brands big and small.

Armin Strom’s open-worked One Week First Edition could do with a snappier name, but presents as a fine option to better-known watches. That’s thanks to a twin-barrel manufacture movement, here on unfettered display, couched in a modernised steel case with stunning hand finishing throughout – Geneva stripes to pale blue PVD (physical vapour deposition) bridges. The limited edition (25 pieces) is guaranteed for 10 years and carries a circa $50,000 tag.
