The cardigan-toting geeks from Britain’s Office for National Statistics are the last people you’d ever expect to make a telling intervention in the history of fashion.

But following a periodic review of the basket of goods used to calculate the British consumer price index – the list of 700 or so items the ONS reckons most accurately represent what households spend their money on – they did exactly that. The statisticians axed the men’s suit.
