The word “complications” has been around since the very first watches were being cobbled together and artisans were figuring out how to measure time accurately with a mechanical device. Since then, the word has commonly been used to describe additional functions a watch might boast – tourbillons, chiming minute-repeaters, perpetual calendars and what have you.
The fun part has been the competition – various watchmakers claiming to have out-complicated their peers with the number of complications they’ve been able to cram into a timepiece.
