It’s not often a watch brand has an edge over all others, one that not only aids and abets accuracy but can be seen doing its unique thing. Yet that is precisely the case with Grand Seiko, which in 2004 introduced its so-called Spring Drive movement.
The innovation shocked collectors, prompting them to reconsider a brand they’d hitherto regarded as, well, Japan-centric and more commendable than covetable, and it has been on the must-have list of serious collectors ever since.
