This exciting new Australian design gallery opened in a rundown house

A Melbourne studio started as a “bit of a laugh” has become a one-stop shop for collectors of unusual Australian works. 

Australia’s most exciting new design gallery was started as “a bit of a laugh”, says co-founder of Oigall Projects, Andrew Kelly. In the depths of Melbourne’s seemingly endless lockdowns, he and partner Mitchell Zurek started “bashing together” furniture from slabs of travertine and blocks of cast aluminium as a way of staving off cabin fever.

The monolithic pieces gained enough Insta-traction that the pair decided to open a showcase. So, they bought a rundown two-storey Victorian house on a sunny corner of Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, gathered a group of their designer-maker peers and in March last year opened the doors to a deliberately raw, deliciously intimate street level space.
