Our motoring writer tested dozens of cars on all kinds of routes during the year, but nothing beat driving two Benz classics along the California coast.
A note, spoken into my phone, says “beautiful in every way”. It refers to the Mercedes-Benz 280SL, the so-called Pagoda model, named after the shape of its removable hardtop. The comment could also describe the Cabrillo Highway that runs through Big Sur on the California coast.
The two came together in my most memorable drive of 2023.
