Why Steve Kilbey's career is now a broad church

The writer of serious, impressionistic pop gems for The Church says he's happy to run workshops for primary schoolers and bash out the hits on '80s package shows.

Pity Steve Kilbey's financial planner. "My whole career, I get these huge chunks of cash coming in, then long periods of nothing," says the singer-songwriter, best known for founding and fronting psychedelic rock band The Church, from behind his sunglasses and neat grey beard.

Case in point: many of us would have last seen Kilbey on ABC TV's New Year's Eve concert at Sydney Opera House, singing The Church's shimmering 1988 masterpiece Under The Milky Way.
