Why Melissa Caddick’s discount jewels were bad value for her victims

The Melissa Caddick name did nothing to deter buyers from snapping up the missing con woman’s diamond and gem-studded jewellery collection in Sydney last week.

Bidding was fast and furious at the Smith & Singer auction with all 54 lots sold – a 100 per cent clearance rate is unheard of in jewellery sales. The auction raised a total of $720,800 on the hammer, double its low estimate of $411,700 – or 175 per cent by value.
