In 2017, the bright-eyed, recently elected French president Emmanuel Macron gave a speech addressing students in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. Lasting almost two hours, it was meant to reset the relationship between France and its former colonies in Africa.
Macron touched on lots of important issues, including terrorism, climate change, and, in a passage that made the hair of Western museum directors stand on end, culture.
