Fiona Allan thought that after 17 years away from Australia, the “cultural cringe” which dogged it last century would have disappeared.

Yet after returning from the largely cringe-free UK in November to run Opera Australia, the nation’s largest performing arts company, she was surprised to find the “foreign equals better” mentality alive and well.
