‘I use my paintbrush as a weapon’: Vincent Namatjira’s new exhibition

The acclaimed Indigenous artist’s latest exhibition takes aim at Empire and influence – using broad strokes of humour to skewer his targets.

It’s been a busy few years for Vincent Namatjira. When we last spoke, in late 2018, the artist was preparing a trip to Miami where 10 of his cheekily cartoonish canvases were about to go on show at the prestigious Art Basel fair.

Since then, he’s been awarded the Ramsay Art Prize for an artist under 40, scooped the Archibald Prize for portraiture (the first Indigenous artist to do so), been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia, and shown his work alongside other painters from the Iwantja Arts collective in remote north-west South Australia at a downtown New York gallery.
