Bringing a gibberish script to life wasn’t easy and needed a lot of experimentation. What the performers didn’t know was how the subtitle writers were going to interpret the dialogue.

It was this crazy idea, New Zealand filmmaker Armagan Ballantyne says. Take the script she and actress Jackie van Beek had worked on for the past year – about a couple experiencing a breakdown in communication – and turn it into gibberish.

Then, after it was shot, bring in comedians to interpret what was said and write subtitles.
