He was David Helfgott’s hands. Now he must have fingers in many pies

Sharing the stage with a $16 million violin and donning a powdered wig to become Mozart – pianist Simon Tedeschi on the eclectic lot of a classical musician.

Simon Tedeschi might arguably be Australia’s finest pianist, but he’s also used to sometimes getting nudged out of the spotlight.

Thirty years ago, a 13-year-old Tedeschi – already a prodigy who’d played solo at Sydney Opera House and in a private audience with Luciano Pavarotti – was pulled out of a Year 8 maths class at St Andrews Cathedral School and on to a film set, to become the hands of a young David Helfgott in the movie Shine.
