Former NSW premier Mike Baird has been put in charge of restoring National Australia Bank's reputation and represents a new breed of popular, well-known leader, well-placed to rebuild public trust, recruiters say.

Mr Baird, who Mr Thorburn recruited last April, became the short-priced favourite to succeed Andrew Thorburn as CEO of NAB on Monday, following the shock departures of top executives Andrew Hagger and Antony Cahill, who were both considered to be in the running to take the top job.
